JOB TITLE: Assistant Solicitor

REPORT TO/SUPERVISED BY: Legal Manager, Practice Manager

TRAINING PROVIDED BY: Legal Manager/ external training courses/CPD

MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION: To have conduct of a Motor Offence Defence caseload under minimal supervision.


  • To consistently meet Key Performance Indicators relevant to the role on a monthly basis and to meet initial milestones plan during Probationary Period.
  • Conducting professional telephone discussions with new enquiries and providing advice with confidence.
  • Converting new enquiries in accordance set Targets.
  • Participating in sales training sessions and applying the techniques learned.
  • Advising clients, including advice on technical issues, costs, penalties.
  • Applying appropriate law, procedures and firm strategy relevant to the type of case.
  • Instructing experts and Counsel in accordance with firm procedure.
  • Infrequent police station attendance due to the firm being private paying based (No Legal Aid/Duty Scheme)
  • Conduct hearings where required or to attend court with Counsel if required.
  • Full use of the case management system (Proclaim), house style, office procedures and working in a self-supporting fashion where appropriate.
  • To ensure concluded cases are reviewed so all disbursements are paid, that any non-chargeable work is written off if appropriate, to account to the client with any refund and to ensure the file is closed and archived.
  • To ensure all files are Lexcel compliant
  • Record a minimum of 7 chargeable hours per day on the Proclaim Case Management system and raise timely bills in accordance with targets set.
  • Be organised and effectively time manage a fast paced case load.
  • Taking and processing client payments.
  • Drafting representations in relation to taxed Central Funds Bills if required.
  • To complete the required amount of Common Professional Development required.
  • To assist in networking activities, marketing projects and in promoting the profile of the firm.
  • To take part in contributing to social media policy of the firm by way of research, blogs, articles and sharing of social media.
  • Assisting in out of office hours calls/queries, taking part in the rota for the Geoffrey Miller out of office mobile. Prompt responses to calls and email enquiries are essential, however, additional payments are made for out of hours cover
  • On infrequent occasions it may also be necessary to work outside of usual office hours and whilst this will not be obligatory, it is expected that a mutual agreement will be reached. (Eg. In run up to annual maintenance review for Lexcel / IIP/attending Court)

We are looking for candidates who share the firm’s unique vision for success from day one, although intensive training and support will be provided.


1. Educational and professional qualifications.

Qualified Solicitor with Law degree/equivalent; CPE; LPC; PSC; Law degree, CPE and LPC or equivalent.

2. Professional (relevant) experience.

One year of experience in Motor Defence Law or Two years of post-qualification experience in General Crime or Regulatory Law.

3. Personal skills.

  • To adopt the “Client is King” ethos in every aspect of work.
  • An excellent written and oral communicator using laymen’s terms only, with a modern approach to client care.
  • A clear and straightforward advocacy style although advocacy will be a secondary part of the role.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to run a fast paced case load with minimal supervision and maintain the firm’s high standards in all areas.
  • Identify relevant issues, think laterally and strategically, and apply appropriate law.
  • Conciliatory but firm approach to dealings with opponents.
  • Friendly and respectful attitude towards work companions of all levels and status.
  • Ability to work well within an open plan environment.

4. Personal qualities of special important

  • Commercial Awareness in respect of converting cases and billing requirements.
  • Approachable.
  • Down to Earth.
  • A team player.
  • Empathy for clients and genuine desire to help clients who face prosecution.

  • Enthusiasm towards networking and building on the success of the business.

5. Additional (following/contacts etc).

Ability to introduce work to the firm is preferable although not essential.

Ability to demonstrate confidence and skill to clients at the outset of their enquiry in order to achieve a high level of conversions and ongoing rapport and goodwill throughout the time frame of a client’s case.

6. Computer/typing skills

Must be fully computer literate and able to do all own typing.

Administrative assistance will be available but not by way of dictation/typing support.
