JOB DESCRIPTION – SOLICITOR

JOB TITLE: Solicitor

REPORT TO/SUPERVISED BY: Director (legal work), Practice Manager (human resources/non legal work)

TRAINING PROVIDED BY: Director and Training Mentor

MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION: To have conduct of motoring law caseload, supervision.

KEY TASKS:

  1. Applying appropriate law and procedures.
  2. Advising clients on all aspects including advice on technical issues, costs, penalties.
  3. Time management and time recording. Expected to record a minimum of 7 chargeable hours per day.
  4. Meeting of monthly Key Performance Indicators.
  5. On occasion it may also be necessary to work outside of usual office hours and whilst this will not be obligatory, it is expected that a mutual agreement will be reached. (Eg. In run up to annual maintenance review for Lexcel).
  6. Assisting with the out of hours rota (occasional police station work usually during office hours).
  7. Instructing experts and Counsel in accordance with firm procedure.
  8. Applying case management system, house style in all letter writing and office procedures and working in a self-supporting fashion where appropriate.
  9. Billing in accordance with targets set.
  10. Assisting in training of other executives.
  11. Assisting in drafting standard letters and documents.
  12. To assist in networking activities and in promoting the profile of the firm in a marketing capacity.
  13. On occasion it may also be necessary to work outside of usual office hours and whilst this will not be obligatory, it is expected that a mutual agreement will be reached.
  14. Conduct hearings.
  15. Assist with marketing activities.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. Educational and professional qualifications

Law degree/equivalent; PSC; Law degree, CPE and LPC or equivalent. One year of experience in Motor Defence Law or Two years of post qualification experience in General Crime or Regulatory Law.

2. Professional (relevant) experience

Training in a general criminal or motoring firm with some experience of motoring.

3. Personal skills

To adopt the “Client is King” ethos in every aspect of work. A good communicator with a clear and straightforward advocacy style although advocacy will be a secondary part of the role.

Excellent time management and organisational skills; ability to identify relevant issues, think laterally, and apply appropriate law; strong computer skills;

Good written and oral communication skills using laymen’s terms only, with a modern approach to client care;

Friendly and respectful attitude towards work companions of all levels and status; ability to work well within an open plan environment; conciliatory but firm approach to dealings with opponents.

4. Personal qualities of special important

Approachability; Down to Earth; Commercial Awareness; a team player, Integrity and Empathy for clients; attention to detail; reliability; commercial awareness in understanding of billing requirements; enthusiasm towards networking and sales aspect of the role.

Awareness of and open to philosophies such as “law of attraction” Feng Shui and the benefits of a positive mindset.

5. Additional (following/contacts etc).

Ability to introduce work to the firm is preferable although not essential.

6. Computer/typing skills

All staff are expected to be self-sufficient typists with administrative assistance support provided.

The firm uses a bespoke case management system and any prior experience in case management development could be of benefit in the role.
